Final Project

Initial Idea

We wanted to make a dynamic sculpture inspired by Alexander Calder with homemade bioplastic.

Updated Idea

After our field trip to the Greenwood Cemetery. We had a new idea that brings more connection to the nature to our project.

We want to keep the dynamic sculpture form we were picturing before, but add more depth to it.

In this new plan, we are adding SCOBY and plastic wastes. The above image is a sketch of our new plan.

There are two layers in this dynamic structure. The main curve layer is holding a secondary curve layer on one side, and two piece of SCOBYs on the other. The two SCOBYs are shaped into a bird and sun shapes, representing the nature. The secondary curve layer is hold a bunch of plastic wastes we found on one side, and hold several bioplastics on the other.

The secondary structure is balanced reflecting the equal quality we can get from bioplastic as a replacement of normal plastic. It shows the potential of bioplastic. However, the main structure is off balanced, due to the heavy weight of the fresh SCOBY. However, while the SCOBY naturally dry and lose weight through out the time, the structure will slowly find its balance, and reach equilibrium. It shows the power of nature to off set human actives, and deep connection we have with the nature.

We want to use this piece to show potential of environmentally friendly material, and also call for awareness of connection of nature.
